MORE TO Childminding

Writer: Kat LordKat Lord

Priya Kanabar and I met on the exhibition scene, having been at the Nursery World Show and the Childcare and Education Expo for the last few years. It was there that she told me she had an idea for a book, and I said, when it is out, let us collaborate.

We both work in childcare and her book seeks to share all the wonderful things gained from working in this sector.

Priya has worked as a babysitter, childminder and dance-fitness teacher since 2013, operating her business in the Borough of Newham, East London.

Her book (The Joys of Childminding, October 2023) is full of the benefits to be gained from working within the early years sector. It marks a 10th anniversary celebration and her long term goal is to inspire more male practitioners to join the sector.

Her setting's focus is child-led planning,  independent learning and a hands on, outdoors approach. Yoga, dance-fitness and various educational trips are some of the teaching elements used in her creative based setting.

We collaborated on this blog as I think it is so important to be supportive and share all the great things available to inspire others which impact children positively.

How did your book come about?

Since lockdown so many childminders have struggled to operate their settings as usual and so many have closed. This is why I chose to write a book about 'The Joys of Childminding;' highlighting the positives of my job.

My book is a celebration as well as inspiration for others.

What is your favourite part about supporting child development?

My favourite part of supporting children's development is when I give them their special books and their parents tell me years later, how much it means to them. How they have a record of the wonderful memories with me and our close bond. Keeping in touch with the children, knowing they still remember and value my hard work makes the job so worthwhile.

What is next for Priya?

There are new books on the way including a children's book and cookbook.

I am focussing on writing articles for magazines to inspire readers, as well as taking part in discussions about all things childcare.

I like to think of Kids In Motion being a family; we get together to celebrate festivals outside of the setting and the children all have close bonds, they even keep in touch after they leave.

Going above and beyond I these ways helps families to socialise, therefore building relationships with each other, as well as with me.
